After the training days with excellent conditions, pilots were put on the rack for a long time until the weather allowed to start the World Gliding Championships in Szeged, Hungary. Only the Open class got a competition day on the planned 3rd day. For the other classes the competition started at the 5th day. At least 7 competition days could be realized, but not with the promising weather conditions of the training days.
Right on the first day Karol Staryszack with his
ASG 29
took overall lead in the 18m class, superiorly claiming it till the 6th day. The last day it did not work out too well, and he had to hand over to his team mate Zbigniew Nieradka, an
ASG 29
- pilot, too. But his 3rd place at the finish documents his excellent flying performance on the days before.
The FAI 15m class did take a stretching course, too. Leigh Wells (GB) in his ASG 29-15 always was among the top pilots, even leading the field for four days. Again the last day had its obstacles, and Stefano Ghiorzo pulled ahead. After his 4th place at the Championships 2008 in Lüsse, Leigh Wells became Vice World Champion this year. Of course, we also congratulate all new champions and competing pilots not only for placing well on individual days but also for a solid team effort and for conducting a fair competition.
