Introducing the new AS 35 Mi
Last Saturday, we unveiled our latest development—the AS 35 Mi.
An aircraft that embodies our experience, our values, and our passion for gliding—and carries them forward into a new generation.
A day between excitement and gratitude
Sixty invited guests joined us for this special occasion at the Von-Steinrück-Haus in Poppenhausen. Customers, partners, and friends of the company came together to witness the latest development milestone for our company. Among them were several employees, who were invited on behalf of all their colleagues who contributed to this success with their tremendous dedication, as well as customers from around the world who have already placed their trust in us and chosen our latest aircraft. Also in attendance were our design team, the new General Manager of Austro Engines, Jürgen Schwarz, our EASA administrator Jannes Neumann, gliding influencer and world champion Stefan Langer, and our senior boss Edgar Kremer with his wife Hedwig Kremer, daughter of our company founder Alexander Schleicher. We were also delighted to welcome many other companions and supporters who celebrated this special occasion with us.
Once the official program had come to an end, the evening moved into a more convivial phase. In a relaxed atmosphere, the focus was now on personal interaction, lively conversations, and shared memories—accompanied by a palpable sense of joy and pride in what had been achieved.
Our CEO Ulrich Kremer opened the event with a review of our company’s history and the people who shape it:
“This shows how much experience and skill our employees, some of whom have been with AS for many years, have. It is not without reason that we adopted the slogan ‘Tomorrow from Tradition’ a few years ago. Speaking of the past, a few days ago I came across the biography of my grandfather and our company founder, Alexander Schleicher. It was impressive to read about the difficult circumstances under which the company was founded and how subsequent crises were overcome – always with the goal of building high-quality aircraft that our customers could enjoy for many years to come. This spirit lives on in our family business to this day.”
Project leader Tobias Mörsel then outlined the entire project schedule—from the initial ideas to the completion of the prototype—and gave guests an insight into the thinking of our design team.
He talked about the early concepts he developed together with Paul Anklam, the presentation of the final design to the management, and the implementation and completion of the first AS 35 Mi.
At the end of the speeches, Patrick Wenzeck from our marketing team presented the design team with a handmade sculpture of the AS 35 Mi wing – as a token of gratitude for their dedication and commitment over the past months.
Jannes Neumann (EASA) also made a special gesture: he personally handed over the official flight conditions, enabling flight testing to begin – an important milestone for all of us.
AS 35 Mi – Performance, everyday usability, and character
With the AS 35 Mi, we have developed a glider that combines performance, handling, and independence. A wingspan of 20 meters, a wing loading of over 62 kg/m², and an efficient rotary engine from Austro Engines form the basis for excellent high-speed flight characteristics and self-launch capability. The steerable, retractable tail wheel improves ground handling, while the newly designed cockpit with optimized ergonomics and modern controls ensures a precise, safe flying experience. With slightly swept, almost elliptical wings and split flaps, the AS 35 Mi continues the proven airfoil family of the AS 33 – now transferred to the Open Class. The result is an aircraft that is equally suited to ambitious competition pilots and experienced leisure pilots.
A project with a lot of commitment
The development of the AS 35 Mi was challenging. Parallel to the introduction of our new ERP system, our team worked hard to meet the tight schedule. Many colleagues invested additional time and energy to make this deadline possible.
This team spirit and the precision of each individual contribution are reflected in the result—an aircraft that we as a team are very proud of.
Special thanks go to all our employees.
Without them, this project would not have been possible.
They support our company day after day, using their diligence and experience not only to drive new developments, but above all to ensure the smooth running of daily operations.
Without this foundation, we would not even be able to think about new aircraft.
Outlook: The maiden flight is imminent
This coming weekend, the AS 35 Mi will first be presented to the public at the German Gliding Day in Hamburg. Then, as soon as weather conditions permit, the maiden flight will take place. So keep an eye out for news on our homepage or social media channels.
