By Christmas 1964, Waibel had finished the basic concept of the AS 12, as the ASW 12 was first called. One year later, on 31 December 1965, Edgar Kremer made the initial flight and the plastic composite age had begun in Poppenhausen.
On 4 April 1972 Hans-Werner Grosse made a world record flight of 1,461 km from Lübeck to Biarritz with his ASW 12 which was to stand for decades.
