Edmund Schneider had already designed the ES 49 when the flying and construction of aircraft was still forbidden by the Allies. “ES” stands for Edmund Schneider, the number 49 means the date of the construction in 1949.
His hopes were justified and the Commission of Control gave permission for sailplane flying in 1951. Only a few weeks subsequently Heinz Peters made the first flight in the ES 49.
